Why you need to start in October

Holiday buyers don't wait until December. Many start searching in October, and gift shopping builds steadily through November.

New listings also need time. A listing with a few sales and good feedback usually ranks better than a brand new one. If you list on Black Friday itself, you compete with sellers who have weeks of sales behind them.

So aim to have your holiday stock listed by early November. Use October to research, buy stock and test your listings.

What to sell for the holidays

Holiday demand is strongest for products people buy as gifts or need for the season. These categories are good places to start your research.

  • Toys and games. Popular toys often sell out in shops, which sends buyers to eBay.
  • Electronics and accessories. Headphones, smart home devices, chargers and gaming gear sell well around Black Friday.
  • Collectables and trading cards. Gift buyers pay well for sealed products and popular sets.
  • Christmas decorations. Lights, ornaments and wreaths peak from mid-November.
  • Small gifts and stocking fillers. Low-priced items under $25 or £20 sell in high volume.
  • Winter clothing. Coats, gloves and boots sell as the weather turns cold.

Don't stock a product just because it appears on a list. Check that it sold recently, at a good price, against a sensible number of sellers. Our guide on what sells on eBay explains the four signals to check.

Use last year's data

The best guide to this season is last season. eBay's free Product Research tool in Seller Hub shows past sales, so you can see what sold last November and December. Look for products whose sales climbed sharply in the weeks before Christmas.

How to price for Black Friday and Christmas

Buyers expect deals in November. But a discount only helps if you still make money after costs.

Work out your floor price first

Before you plan any sale, know your lowest safe price. Add up the item cost, shipping, packaging and eBay's fees. eBay's fees have changed this year in some countries. In the UK, for example, the per-order fee on orders over £10 rose to £0.40 in February 2026, according to eBay's seller centre.

Our free eBay fee calculator shows your profit, margin and break-even price in seconds. Never discount below break-even.

Choose the right kind of deal

  • Markdown sales show a crossed-out price, which catches the eye in search.
  • Multi-buy discounts raise your order value, which helps cover shipping costs.
  • Offers to buyers who watch your item can turn browsers into buyers.
  • Coupons work well for repeat buyers and social media followers.

You can set up these deals in Seller Hub under Marketing. Plan them before Black Friday, not on the day.

Watch your competitors' prices

Prices move fast in November. Check what your main competitors charge for the same item each week. If they cut prices, decide early whether to match them or compete on speed and service instead.

Make your listings easy to find

Holiday buyers search with gift words. They type phrases like "gift for dad", "stocking filler" or "Christmas present for her".

  • Add gift keywords to your titles. Put the words buyers type near the start of the title.
  • Fill in every item specific. Buyers filter by brand, size and colour, and missing details hide your listing.
  • Use clear, bright photos. Show the item from several angles, and show its size.
  • Mention delivery times. Say clearly if an item will arrive before Christmas.

Run your titles through our free eBay title checker. Then use the eBay rank checker to see where your listing appears for a gift search.

Shipping and returns in peak season

Fast, reliable delivery matters more in December than at any other time. A late gift is a disappointed buyer and, often, a bad review.

  • Shorten your handling time. Same-day or next-day dispatch helps you rank and wins buyers.
  • Stock up on packaging. Boxes, tape and padding run short in December.
  • Know the last posting dates. Check your carrier's Christmas cut-offs and show them in your listings.
  • Offer a longer returns window. Gift buyers like to know that a present can be returned after Christmas.

A generous returns policy builds trust in a busy season. It can win you sales from buyers who are choosing between similar listings.

Promote your best sellers

Competition for search space is fierce in November and December. eBay's own seasonal guide for sellers recommends planning promotions across the whole season, not only on the big days.

Start with a modest ad rate on your proven sellers. Watch your sales and costs each week, and only raise the rate where the extra sales are profitable. Remember that ad fees reduce your margin, so include them in your fee maths.
